Study in Israel
Spend a year studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem – the organisation Verein Studium in Israel e.V. has been giving theology students this opportunity since 1978. They live in Jerusalem and study in Ivrit, also known as modern Hebrew.
Support is provided in the form of an accompanying programme. The students experience everyday Jewish life and holidays at first hand and encounter the diversity of cultures and religions in Jerusalem – with all its conflict. The study programme fosters theological thought in the light of Judaism. It promotes interfaith dialogue in awareness of the common roots of Judaism and Christianity. The organisation is sponsored by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) but is also open to students who are members of other denominations.
“Study in Israel” also offers continuing education programmes in Jerusalem for pastors, deacons and teachers of religious studies. These can for example encompass study trips lasting several months taken during a sabbatical, or one-week courses on subjects relating to interfaith dialogue. The theological continuing education programme is part of the EKD’s educational mission in Jerusalem and the initiative “Evangelical in Jerusalem”.
“Study in Israel” is supervised by a theological study director on site. Pastor Dr. Melanie Mordhorst-Mayer has performed this role since March 2016.
