Music
Prof. Hartmut Rohmeyer has been in charge of church music at the Church of the Redeemer and Church of the Ascension since 1 March 2018.
The Church of the Redeemer's first organists were teachers at the Syrian Orphanage in Jerusalem. Most of them came from Württemberg; it is known that Gotthilf Schrenk worked here from 1912-1914 and Helmut Schrade from 1935-1939. A number of examples of handwritten sheet music in the choir’s archive prove that small polyphonic choral ensembles sang during church services at this time.
The Schuke organ in the Church of the Redeemer was built in 1971 and was then expanded to its current size in 1984. The historic Sauer organ in the Church of the Ascension underwent a thorough overhaul in 1990. Jerusalem’s two Protestant churches consequently both have marvellous instruments that can be heard at their best in these favourable acoustic conditions. Master organ builder Rainer Nass, Berlin (formerly with Schuke-Orgelbau GmbH, now retired) has been looking after both organs with the utmost care and attention to detail for many years.
Elisabeth Roloff was not the only German Protestant church musician in Jerusalem; cantor Elisabeth von der Decken from Kurhessen-Waldeck worked for the Association of Protestant Churches and Missions in South-West Germany in Jerusalem from 1987 to 1996, where one of her most important tasks was to train young organists for the Lutheran churches in Palestine. She mainly worked at the Anglican Cathedral of St. George in east Jerusalem.
KMD (Director of Church Music) Gunther Martin Göttsche was in charge of the music at the Church of the Redeemer and Church of the Ascension from 1 February 2013 until the end of February 2018.
Prof. Hartmut Rohmeyer, former cantor of Lübeck cathedral, took up the post of evangelical cantor in Jerusalem on 1 March 2018.
More information about Protestant church music in Jerusalem
The German Protestant community in Jerusalem celebrates the Lutheran Eucharist in the Church of the Redeemer every Sunday at 10.30 am.
The community attaches great importance to the careful use of liturgy and music during the church services; a service sheet is printed for every Sunday service which provides the full text of the sermon and the titles of the various musical items. The congregational hymns are taken from the Evangelisches Gesangbuch (Evangelical Hymnbook, Baden edition).
Along with the musical works sung by our church choir, our services are often enriched by musical contributions from guests or groups of guests.

The choir of the Church of the Redeemer regularly sings in the services held at the Church of the Redeemer and Church of the Ascension and also gives about two concerts a year.
We meet every Tuesday from 6 pm to 7.30 pm in the library of the Provost’s House (choir holiday in July, August and between Christmas and the New Year).
We give a warm welcome to everyone who would like to join in – even if it's only for a short time! Rehearsals are held in German. We sing settings of old and new church hymns, canons, motets and cantatas.

In 1971, organ builder Karl Schuke GmbH, Berlin, built the Church of the Redeemer's organ in the newly constructed west gallery. It replaced the old organ built by Berlin-based company Dinse at the time the church was constructed (1898), to which Weigle from Stuttgart added another 33 stops in 1938. Parts of the housing of this organ, which stood slightly elevated in the left transept, were used to build the organ in the great hall of the University of Haifa.
Another three reed stops were added to the Schuke organ in 1984; it now has 21 stops, two manuals and one pedalboard. The stop and key action are mechanical.

The organ in the Auguste Victoria Foundation’s Church of the Ascension on the Mount of Olives was built in 1910 by Wilhelm Sauer, Frankfurt/Oder. The organ of the Evangelical Church of the Redeemer in Bad Homburg (Germany), built in 1908, was taken as the model when designing the casing. The organ has not been altered at any time since it was built (except for cleaning and maintenance work and the subsequent installation of an electric blower, which was replaced in 1992), which makes it one of the best-preserved organs by Wilhelm Sauer still in existence.
There are no reed stops whatsoever; however, one special feature is the (labial) 8’ schalmei (shawm) in the 1st manual which is rich in overtones and sounds like a gentle reed. The organ's other features include a number of 16’ notes in the pedals which are not produced with pipes of this actual length but are created acoustically by a combination of two adjacent pipes with foot lengths of 8′ and 5 1/3′ respectively.
Listening to the warm, full-bodied sound of the organ with its many 16’ and 8’ stops in the church's marvellous acoustics is a truly wonderful experience.
