War has repeatedly plagued the Holy Land for centuries. In 1219 the fighting had moved to Damietta in Egypt. Crusaders and Muslim armies faced each other – that’s when Francis of Assisi tried to talk to the Sultan. The saint from Assisi, who greeted others with the greeting \u201cPeace be with you,\u201d may have tried to pass on this spirit. Perhaps he also saw himself as a missionary who wanted to implement the crusade’s concerns in a different way. The lecture looks at the news we have of this important event and tries to get a coherent picture from it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immer wieder hat durch Jahrhunderte hindurch Krieg das Heilige Land heimgesucht. 1219 hatte sich das Kampfesgeschehen nach Damiette in \u00c4gypten verlagert. Kreuzfahrer und muslimische Heere standen einander gegen\u00fcber – da suchte Franz von Assisi das Gespr\u00e4ch mit dem Sultan. Der Heilige aus Assisi, der andere mit dem Gru\u00df “Friede sei mit Dir” begr\u00fc\u00dfte, mag versucht habe, diesen Geist weiterzugeben. Vielleicht empfand er sich auch als Missionar, der die Anliegen des Kreuzzuges auf andere Weise umsetzen wollte. Der Vortrag geht den Nachrichten nach, die wir von diesem wichtigen Ereignis haben, und versucht, daraus ein stimmiges Bild zu gewinnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
