Über den Film
Giulio Cesare Antamaro’s film, with the programmatically short title Cristo (ITA 1916) is an exceptional example of a silent film about Jesus. It not only recounts the life story of Jesus Christ in a level of detail that remains deeply moving even today, but also does so with unusual references to religious imagery. Christus was a costly and highly ambitious Italian film project, filmed on location in Egypt with great effort. Filming for Christus likely began in the summer of 1913 and was particularly problematic during the First World War. Even before Christus was screened a second time for the censors and finally for the public, it was shown to 15 cardinals at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, who gave the film their unqualified approval.
